Year 8 KLIC Excursion: Mushroom Farm

31 May 2024

Our Year 8 KLIC students recently had the incredible opportunity to visit the Costa Mushroom Farm, the second largest mushroom farm in the Southern Hemisphere. This insightful and educational excursion provided our students with an in-depth look at the fascinating world of mushroom production.

The gracious staff at Costa Mushroom shared a wealth of information about the entire production process. Students learned about the importance of compost and how it creates the perfect environment for mushroom growth. They were then guided through the pasteurisation process, which ensures the compost is free of pests and pathogens.

Students gained an understanding of the growing and harvesting phases, witnessing firsthand how mushrooms are carefully nurtured and picked. The tour also included a look at the packing process, showcasing how the mushrooms are prepared for market.

One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity for students to pick their own mushrooms to take home—the freshest mushrooms they had ever seen! The students were enthralled by this hands-on experience and the impressive scale and efficiency of the farm's operations, which run throughout the year.

The knowledge and insights gained from this excursion have left a lasting impression on our Year 8 KLIC students, enhancing their understanding of agriculture and food production.

A special thank you goes out to the Costa Mushroom Family for their hospitality and for providing such an enriching experience. We will forever see mushrooms in a new light!
